Portuguese as a Foreign Language - Regular Course

Introduction

The Department of Letters of the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) offers its program of Portuguese as a Second /Foreign Language. The Portuguese language courses are designed to develop the students' ability to understand and use both spoken and written Portuguese, so as to allow for communication. Our courses are targeted at people of different nationalities who are interested in learning Brazilian language and culture.

Objective

Learn Brazilian Portuguese through a dynamic methodology, which involves different socio-cultural and historical elements. Our classes are based on a process of teaching and learning the language grammar through music, literature, films, and a range of text genres about the different nuances displayed on Brazilian culture and history.

Target Audience

Foreigners interested in learning the Brazilian language and culture.

Methodology

Classes are offered through two different platforms: Moodle – offers various tools for distance teaching; and Zoom – offers telepresence meetings between students and teachers.

Modules and Investment

Basic - Intermediate I - Intermediate II - 90 hours

Live classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1pm to 3pm through the zoom platform and inclusion of activities on Fridays. The recording of classes and activities will be available for 6 months after the end of the course in the online learning environment of PUC-Rio.


The course can be paid as distribution below:

Advanced I - Advanced II - 60 hours

Advanced I: Live classes on Tuesdays from 1 pm to 3 pm using the zoom platform and including activities on Thursdays. The recording of classes and activities will be available for six months after the end of the course in the online learning environment of PUC-Rio.

Placement Test

To perform the enrollment, it is necessary to carry out the placement test that will take place in two stages:

1st stage - Written Test: To perform the written test, access the link below at any time.
2nd stage - Oral Test: After the written test, we will contact you to schedule the test. The oral interviews will be carried out on 08/01, 02/02, and 27/02/21.

Then you need to click on "Criar minha conta" - create my account.

After that, you will receive an e-mail confirming your registration. Click on the link provided in the e-mail to be redirected to the page where the test is hosted. You must click on the "PROFICIENCY PLACEMENT TEST - PORTUGUESE AS A SECOND/FOREIGN LANGUAGE COURSE - 2021.1".

Note that there will be a blue box with the message "please click here to fill in some additional information to your profile". After filling in the information, You will be able to start the placement test.


Registration

After taking the oral test, an email will be sent stating the level to which the student was approved with the link to register for the course.

Program

Basic:Cinema: Meu tio matou um cara (My uncle killed a guy), film by Jorge Furtado, with well-known casting and diversified soundtrack, is a delightful comedy that takes place at the South of Brazil, showing the difficulties of a typical Brazilian family. Music: famous MPB (Brazilian Popular Music) artists, such as Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento and Seu Jorge revealing aspects of the Brazilian language and culture. Literature: short story by Nelson Rodrigues and its TV adaptation. Themes: themes such as the formation of the Brazilian Family, gastronomy, cost of living are discussed in class.

Intermediate I:Cinema: films that portray the Brazilian society as the awarded Que horas ela volta?(The Second Mother), and the TV series Cidade dos Homens (City of Men). Music: well-known composers and singers of samba, MPB and other genres, such as Dudu Nobre and Marisa Monte. Literature: chronicles by renowned Brazilian authors, such as Luis Fernando Veríssimo (about Brazilian colloquial expressions) and Fernando Sabino (presenting a variety of Brazilian daily situations). Themes: Brazil and its diversity – research and conversation about Brazilian cities from different regions of the country, about their various aspects, such as nature, food, traditional festivities, the rich cultural heritage that are unknown by most foreigners.

Intermediate II:Cinema: based on real facts, the movie Zuzu Angel, notorious character from the Dictatorship Regime times, and O contador de histórias (The story of me), that tells the impressive story of Roberto Carlos Ramos’ life. Music: renowned artists from different eras, such as Chico Buarque, Gilberto Gil and Luiz Gonzaga. Literature: short stories by important authors, such as Marina Colasanti and Moacyr Scliar. Themes: Dry Law, religious teaching at school, Folk festivities and other curious and controversial aspects of the Brazilian culture.

Advanced I:Cinema: awarded movies, such as O ano em que meus pais saíram de férias (The year my parents went on vacation) and Xingu. Music: the Brazilian musical diversity in the songs of Noel Rosa, Chico Buarque, Tom Jobim and Seu Jorge. Literature: Works by Rubem Fonseca, Mário de Andrade, Machado de Assis, Clarice Lispector, Ligya Fagundes Telles and Stanislaw Ponte Preta. Themes: the Brazilian educational system, The Military Dictatorship Years, racism, among others.

Advanced II:Cinema: movies from different phases of Brazilian history, such as O que é isso, companheiro (Four Days in September), that approaches the dictatorial period that took place in the country, and Rock Brasília - a era de ouro (Rock Brasilia – the Golden age), a documentary that presents the work of rock bands during the 1980’s, post-dictatorship years, among others. Music: famous songs by Renato Russo, O Rappa, Diogo Nogueira among other great artists from a variety of musical genres. Literature: short stories by main Brazilian literature authors, such as Guimarães Rosa, Sérgio Porto and others. There are also some TV adaptations for Nelson Rodrigues’ short stories. Themes: peculiar aspects of the Brazilian culture such as roguery, and the freshmen hazing, among others.
