Introduction

Since 1992, the Department of Letters at PUC-Rio has offered the Lato Sensu Postgraduate Course in English. Since then, the course has gained recognition due to its originality, as it presents multiple approaches to the study of the English language. During all these years, the renowned course faculty has been providing students with solid knowledge in their studies of the English language. Many graduates of the course continued their studies in Post-GraduateSstricto sensu programs, several of whom became teachers at higher education institutions, and others have applied their knowledge and background in different segments of the professional market.

The course will be offered in on-line remote access, with synchronous sessions and asynchronous self-study activities. The course load is 260 hours, divided into three academic semesters, with a monograph as a final requirement.

Objectives

The course addresses theoretical and practical aspects of the English language from three perspectives: formal, social and educational. It also aims to promote the improvement of the English language practitioner for the study and/ or teaching of a foreign language. The student will have the opportunity to deepen theoretical knowledge of the English language and to reflect on linguistic and methodological issues.
Some of the topics covered include linguistics and language studies; written and oral discourse; literary discourse; teaching-learning of English as a foreign language; and research methodologies.

Target Audience

Holders of an undergraduate diploma with proficiency in English, interested in studying and/ or teaching this language.

Methodology

The modules of the course will be mainly held in remote access, following different synchronous and asynchronous methodologies, including expository and practical classes; oral presentations; debates; written essays; tutorials, online conferencing, study networks and course forums. Specialist advisers provide academic expertise, guidance and feedback to help with the monographic work.

Investment: The course can be paid in 18 installments of R$ 625,00 each. The first installment should be paid on the registration day.
